The Girls of Shes Geeky NoVA at SxSWi

Update: This event has been postponed until Fall 2009

In honor of Ada Lovelace Day.

INVITATION TO ALL WOMEN!!

She’s Geeky is coming to Northern Virginia – the DC Area.
April 18th McLean Virginia (Tyson’s Corner).
http://www.shesgeeky.org/

Early bird admission is $40 until April 1 – $45 regular until April 11 and $50 after that.
Student admission is $20

We are inviting women from a divers range of industries together for a day of interactive learning and industry cross pollination.

To us Geekiness is self defined – from those with advanced degrees in mathematics, science and engineering. To skilled programmers who are in large enterprises, government or startups. To women who have taught themselves how to code the PHP on their side bars on their blog or just super enthusiastic users of technology.

Each city has a different mix of technologies – DC has a variety of fields
* the nonprofit and advocacy sectors,
* government, defense, aerospace, and intelligence
* Web portals – like AOL
* startups innovating

The range of topics discussed is diverse – in California you can see the list of sessions.

How does the unconference day work?

The sessions are put forward by the women who attend the event – and are diverse. They include expert topics about their particular expertise, hosting conversations about issues of interest both technical and personal (like how to balance work and family), exploring start-up ideas, introductions or deep dives to different programming languages or frameworks, sharing stories about what it was like to work in the early days of the industry, introduction to public speaking and many others.

Beginning at 9 AM each day, we start with a blank wall and, in less than an hour, through a highly participative process, create a full day, multi-track conference agenda that is relevant and inspiring to everyone there.

From there, we go to separate areas or rooms assigned to each topic. The session can be a presentation, inquiry about a question or discussion about an issue or technical field. or. One participant volunteers to record the proceedings.

The notes from each session are collected in the newsroom, then a book is compiled with all the notes from the conference and distributed to everyone who attended.

For this event, we have the pleasure of guest moderator, Jean Russell. This event is co-hosted by Amy Senger of LMI and myself, Andrea Baker, of Navstar, Inc.

Sponsorship opportunities for both small and large companies are available too.

She’s Geeky in NYC December 5-7, 2008

Just to follow up to my earlier post about the She’s Geeky unconference for women in tech is happening. I know its short notice for some, but its in a location everyone should be in early December anyways. Manhattan.

Here are the deets (mostly from the email I have from Kaliya Hamlin, Excutive Producer, with my edits and comments)

She’s Geeky is happening in NYC from December 5-7.  There will be a cocktail party on the evening of the 5th, December 6th is the main day and December 7th is the bonus day if you travelled far and want to still geek out.  (I will be coming up early morning on the 6th from Washington DC by car/train — I have my company holiday party on the 5th)

Sara Holoubeck was able to secure MSFT’s Manhattan space for us recently and we went with it.  As requested by the DC women it is a month following the elections.  I know you may have holiday parties this weekend – just bring the women guests with you to NYC :)

She’s Geeky EAST is for the whole north east coast so women from Boston and DC can both make it to NYC.
We invite you to spread the word amongst your network.
* If you run a women & tech group/mailing list we invite you to be a media sponsor – we can send you more information about how that works (it is free).
* If you want to be a community sponsor – that is make a small but real contribution ($200-$500 let us know we will send you information).
* If you are at a corporation or have corporate contacts let us know this is for contributions in the $1000-$5000 we will send you Supporting Sponsorship package.

The cost of the east coast conference is $100 or $50 for students and those who are unfortunately unemployed.  If you want to be there we want you there so let us know if you need a scholarship.
For all updates for the unconference follow the She’s Geeky Twitter:@shesgeeky
To register for the conference click here.

She’s Geeky is a neutral, face-to-face forum for women who like to geek out about all kinds of things:  computers, science, math, design, robotics, web 2.0 etc…

The purpose is to bring women from a diversity of technical sectors together to:
1. Exchange skills and learn from women in different fields of technology
2. Discuss issues that affect women in the technology industry
3. Connect with other women in technology, computing, entrepreneurship, funding, hardware, open source, nonprofit and any other technical geeky field
4. Build cross generational relationships.
Hope to see you all there, my fellow female geeks :)
